Queen: Pain is so close to Pleasure

Queen lyrics

Words and music by Freddie Mercury and John Deacon

Pain is so close to pleasure oh yeah
Sunshine and rainy weather go hand in hand together all
your life
Pain is so close to pleasure everybody knows
One day we love each other then we're fighting one another
all the time
When I was young and just getting started
And people talked to me they sounded broken hearted
Then I grew up and got my imagination
And all I wanted was to start a new relation
So in love but love had a bad reaction
I was looking for some good old satisfaction
But pain is all I got when all I needed was some love and
affection
Pain is so close to pleasure yeah yeah
Sunshine and rainy weather go hand in hand together all
your life
Pain and pleasure
Pain and pleasure
When your plans go wrong and you turn out the light
But inside of your mind you have to put up a fight
Where are the answers that we're all searching for
There's nothing in this world to be sure of anymore
Some days you're feeling good some days you're feeling bad
But if you're feeling happy someone else is always sad
Let the sweetness of love wipe the tears from your face
For better for worse so let's make the best of the rest of our
years
Pain is so close to pleasure I told you so
Sunshine and rainy weather go hand in hand together all
your life
Pain and pleasure
Pain is so close to pleasure yeah yeah
Sunshine and rainy weather go hand in hand together all
your life
All your life
Pain - pleasure ....
How this relates to my radio play?:

~Content:
This relates to my radio play because it talks about a unlikely relationship which keeps on breaking however the people in it keep on reuniting and falling in love again which relates to what happens to Billy and Helena in my radio play.

~Dialogue: This could reflect both Helena and Billy's emotion through the way the relationship is un realistic and would never be because of the war however they are together because they love each other.

Saving Private Ryan

After the invasion of fortress Europe on June 6th 1944, Tom Hanks leads his squad from the 2nd Ranger Battalion of the 29th Infantry Division, on a mission to find and bring home Private James Francis Ryan after the death of his brothers. The mission takes them through Nazi occupied territory to establish contact with Ryan's unit an element of the 101st Airborne Division. This exiting war thriller brings the reality of history's bloodiest war into the homes of ordinary people, but also brings into light the reality of broken and lost families in a time of total and encompassing war.

How it relates to my Radio Play:

-Genre: War, saving the ones you love, family and hope

-Content: The sense of saving the ones you love and care about (Through the way the mother asks that her last surviving son is to return home. )

- No one gets left behind: Billy wants to save Helena no mattter how serious or dangerous the situation gets which is similar to Tom Hanks' character seeking to find Private Ryan.

- War and relationships during the time of WW2.

Dialogue: Looking back on events

Ghost

Sam and Molly are a very happy couple and deeply in love. Walking back to their new apartment after a night out at the theatre, they encounter a thief in a dark alley, and Sam is murdered. He finds himself trapped as a ghost and realises that his death was no accident. He must warn Molly about the danger that she is in. But as a ghost he can not be seen or heard by the living, and so he tries to communicate with Molly through Oda Mae Brown, a psychic who didn't even realise that her powers were real

How this relates to my radio play? :

- Content: The Male trying to protect the female in the relationship against life threatening and dangerous situations.
~betrayal of Friends: Carl betraying Sam and Rory betraying Billy
~ The Male is killed

-Genre: Romance, Trust, Hope and Betrayal

Characterisation:  Sam: relation to Billy: Both of these characters are similar as they both want to protect the woman they love. For example in Ghost Sam risks his life tro save Molly and wants to protect her even when he is a Ghost and Billy wants to protect Helena from the camps and the horrors that she has to face.

~Molly: relation to Helena: They are both well educated women and would do anything for the men they love however they can also be dimissive for example when Helena doesn't understand the camp and how serious it is with her being in there and when Molly ignores Ode Mae's warning that Sam gives her about Carl.

~Carl: realtion to Rory: Both are best friends to the main character and they also both care about their jobs however both Rory and Carl are characters who cannot be trusted, get jealous easily and who also betray their best friends for instance when Carl makes sure that Sam gets killed for money and Rory tells Billy's father that Billy and Helena are together.

Imagine research

The Beatles: Imagine:

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

This relates to my radio play because it not only emphasizes the effects of war on people and it could also relate to the Jews as it emphasizes what they might of been thinking but it also shows Helena and Billy's relationship because even though both are from opposite sides they don't really care about anything apart from loving each other and the sense of hope.

Queen: One Year Of Love

Just one year of love
Is better than a lifetime alone
One sentimental moment in your arms
Is like a shooting star right through my heart
It's always a rainy day without you
I'm a prisoner of love inside you -
I'm falling apart all around you - yeah
My heart cries out to your heart
I'm lonely but you can save me
My hand reaches out for your hand
I'm cold but you light the fire in me
My lips search for your lips
I'm hungry for your touch
There's so much left unspoken
And all I can do is surrender
To the moment just surrender

And no one ever told me that love would hurt so much
(Oooh yes it hurts)
And pain is so close to pleasure
And all I can do is surrender to your love
(Just surrender to your love)
Just one year of love
Is better than a lifetime alone
One sentimental moment in your arms
Is like a shooting star right through my heart
It's always a rainy day without you
I'm a prisoner of love inside you
I'm falling apart all around you
And all I can do is surrender

This song relates to my radio play because it gives the impression that even though love can hurt it is still the best thing that can happen to you which is similar to Billy and Helena's situation because it shows that even though both get tortured  and hurt both physically and emotionally it does not really matter because they both love each other. It also shows the voices of both of the characters through the way Billy wants to escape the pressure from his Father and he wants to save Helena and Helena wants to escape the camp and be with Billy.

The Inner Life of Martin Frost

After working for three years on a novel, writer Martin Frost borrows the empty country house of his friends for a long-needed rest. No sooner does he arrive, however, than an idea for a new story inspires him to get back to work. When he wakes the following morning, eager to begin his new tale, Martin is shocked to find a strange young woman sleeping next to him in bed--the attractive, effervescent Claire. Presumably the niece of his hosts, Claire wittily overcomes Martin's initial resistance to her, and the two of them agree to share the country house, while promising to respect each other's space. Soon their attraction for each other takes over and they begin to fall in love. But, is Claire really the person she claims to be? As Martin nears the finish of his story, Claire falls deathly ill. Does this mysterious muse have an existence independent from Martin's story? Can the imaginary cross over into the real world, and, if so, what are the consequences?

How this relates to my radio play?:

- Genre:  Love, Trust, betrayal and drama

-Content:  This is similar as both hold a love story which then breaks because of trust and betrayal. Both Martin and Claire in this film have issues with trust as they are both strangers and fall in love instantly which is similar to Billy and Helena falling in love with the fact that one is German and one is a Jew.
The expression of writing and re telling a story is also similar to my play as Martin is writing his own book and there is a character in the film narrating in between scenes which is very similar to Billy and Helena writing diaries and letters and reading the Odyssey and Billy's narration.

-Transitions: In this film neither Martin or Claire narrate but its a character who you meet later on during the plot this however gave me influence to Billy's narration as between each scene the character narrates what the characters are thinking which relates to what Billy says in each scene.

-Characterisation: Martin is very similar to Billy because both are confused with what they are doing with their life, they are both dismissive about what is happening around them and can easily fall in love with their gentle and caring side. They both are men who love writing and books and who want to carry out an ambition of being writers. They also care deeply for the women they love even though there are issues in front of them such as; Helena being a Jew for Billy and Claire being a stranger and lying for Martin.

Australia Research

In northern Australia at the beginning of World War II, an English aristocrat inherits a cattle station the size of Maryland. When English cattle barons plot to take her land, she reluctantly joins forces with a rough-hewn stock-man to drive 2,000 head of cattle across hundreds of miles of the country's most unforgiving land, only to still face the bombing of Darwin, Australia, by the Japanese forces that had attacked Pearl Harbor only months earlier.

How this will help me with my Radio Play? :

-Genre: War, Romance, Revenge and Trust

-Characterisation:  Drover relates to Billy as he adventurous and dismissive. He also has different ambitions however he knows that because of jobs he cannot reach them. He also is unique to the other people like him and is looked down on which is similar to Billy being looked down on by his Father.
-Sarah relates to Helena because she is innocent and is seen as a delicate woman however once she sees adventure she takes it like when she goes with Drover. She also has a forbidden love affair with the drover which she knows will make people look down on her however she chooses to ignore it just like Helena does with her relationship with Billy.
-Fletcher relates to Emmett as he achieves to get what he wants by loosing his temper easily and using violence to get his own way. He is a sly character who is only concerned about himself. He too has a son which he wishes was not his which is similar to Emmett not wanting Billy as a son.

- Content:  Australia relates to Diaries of a Prisoner because it deals with the issue of a forbidden love affair, breaking boundaries and people staying together through war. The war between the 'Blacks' and the 'Whites' is also similar to the Germans and the Jews.
